In the weeks of Advent, leading to Christmas, we are sharing a variety of reflections on children and childhood. Here we read wise words from Maria Montessori. Let us pray for the grace to open our consciousness to the vast world we have been placed in, and be grateful for daily life and love.
Children love adults; that is how we must know them. Yet we always speak of how much parents and teachers love children. people even speak of how children must be taught to love their mothers, fathers, teachers — indeed everything and everyone. And who are these instructors who would teach the child to love? Those who treat as misbehaviour all the child’s activities and who deal with them punitively? No adult can become a teacher of love without a special effort, without opening the eyes of his consciousness to see a world more vast than his own.
Yes, children love adults deeply.
